Thỉnh thoảng, tôi lại nghe có người to nhỏ với nhau như thế này: “Công việc của các linh mục quá dễ, cả tuần chỉ có mỗi việc dâng lễ và soạn bài giảng, nhàn hạ hơn là chúng mình nhiều!” Bạn có bao giờ nghĩ như vậy không?

Nếu bạn nghĩ như vậy, thì bạn lầm to rồi! Công việc rao giảng của các linh mục chẳng dễ dàng một chút nào cả, nếu không muốn nói là rất khó! Tại sao lại khó? Xin thưa là bởi vì hai lý do sau:

Thứ nhất, các linh mục phải giảng mỗi ngày, lễ ngày thường cũng như lễ Chúa Nhật, đám cưới cũng như đám tang, lễ giỗ cũng như lễ kỷ niệm hôn phối …và phải giảng suốt đời! Nếu không được Đức Giám Mục hay Bề Trên thuyên chuyển, phải phục vụ nhiều năm tại một nhiệm sở thì còn căng nữa!

Thứ hai, khi đứng trên bục giảng, khi rao giảng Lời Chúa, các linh mục phải nói đến những điều rất là tế nhị, phải nói lên những vấn nạn trong đời sống, và phải chỉ cho người ta thấy đâu là đúng, và đâu là sai, ví dụ…

Occasionally, I hear people make comments such as: “The work that priests do is so easy. Their whole week is dedicated to the celebration of the Eucharist and preparation of the homily. If I knew that back then, I would have joined the seminary/monastery to lessen my problems that I experience now!” Have you ever thought so?

If you think so, I am afraid you are mistaken! The seemingly simple task of preaching from a priest requires enormous efforts! Why is it so? For these two reasons:

First of all, priests need to preach every day, for daily Masses as well as for Sunday Masses, not to mention the wedding as well as funeral Masses, death anniversary as well as wedding anniversary Masses…and they need to preach till the end of their life! For whatever reasons, if they do not receive permission from the Bishops or Provincial Superior to transfer/relocate to a different parish after serving so many years in one place, it would cause great stress!

Secondly, while standing on the pulpit to preach the Word of God, priests must always be mindful of their responsibility to speak the truth and to preach about the errors of those actions which are contrary to justice, opposed to morality, or contrary to the teachings of the Gospel. Instead of trying to be politically correct, priests need to teach people right from wrong. Take, for instance…
